How big is The Refuge?

3305 sqft or 307.00m2

The Refuge is a one-bedroom palapa casita designed for one or two guests. The bedroom is fully enclosed and air-conditioned. The rest of the space offers indoor-outdoor living under a soaring palapa roof — including a living area, kitchen, dining room, and home gym space. There’s also a rooftop terrace for sunbathing and stargazing.

Is there good wifi?

Yes — The Refuge offers the top wifi speeds available in the area. The wifi is suitable for remote work, video calls, and streaming. Our guests and owner use the wifi for extended remote work stays.

Do you have A/C?

Yes! The bedroom has A/C, though it should only be necessary Aug - Oct. The A/C unit is serviced yearly.

Do you only offer monthly rentals?

Monthly rentals are preferred — a minimum of one month. It’s better for the neighbors. Please get in touch if you are interested in a different timeframe.

How much does it cost?

$900USD/mo. Rental rates are in line with the local market and vary by season. High season is Nov - May and rates may be higher during these months. Get in touch via our contact page for more info.

What kinds of payment do you accept?

Payment is cash-only, payable at the beginning of the month.

Is a car rental available?

Yes. A Jeep Liberty is available for daily rental at $35/day. It should only be driven locally. Please inquire when booking to confirm availability and rates.

Do you have dedicated parking?

Yes! You have dedicated parking for one vehicle in the driveway. Additional vehicles will need to be parked outside on the street.

Do I need a 4 wheel drive vehicle?

People certainly manage without, but it does make life easier. You can get to The Refuge without 4WD, no problem, but getting to the beaches and the good nature spots requires navigating dirt roads that may or may not have been recently graded.

Inquire about renting the Jeep at a daily rate if you need 4WD.

Are pets allowed?

Yes! The Refuge is pet-friendly. But do keep in mind that the neighbors have both cats and dogs, all well-socialized. And if your companion is an escape artist, then it might not make sense.

Please chat with the property manager before bringing your pet, to ensure a good fit.

How do I get the keys?

You will need to coordinate your arrival with the property manager, Angie, to get the keys. But that’s easy! She currently lives just a few doors down.

Can I walk to the beach?

Todos Santos proper isn’t on the beach, but here you’ve got walkability to all the food, galleries, shopping, and margaritas you could want.

Playa la Cachora is the closest beach. It’s about 25min walking. It’s largely an empty beach because you cannot swim there. It is great for meditating or running though.

If you want to go swimming or surfing, you’ll want to drive over to Cerritos or out to La Pastora.

Are you really in downtown Todos Santos?

Yes! The Refuge is in El Centro (Downtown), Todos Santos. It’s an easy walk to everything within the town. You can also walk to nearby destinations in Otro Lado, like the famous La Esquina. Further destinations like Las Tunas are a bit far for a walk, though it’s a short drive.

What’s El Molino Residential Park?

The Refuge is located inside the historic “El Molino Residential Park.” Once an important sugar cane mill that processed Todos Santos’ sugar cane crops, “The Park,” as we call it, is an ex-pat community of mostly Canadians and Americans who live part-time in Baja. The Park is a gated community that includes Pura Vida Health Food Store + Restaurant, a 4-room boutique hotel, and 21 residential casitas. The ruins of the sugar cane mill are the best-preserved in the area, and make an amazing setting for the community pool. It’s a magical neighborhood in a magical town!

After the sugar mill closed in the mid 1900 (due to a drought) two couples from the USA purchased the property in the late 80's. They started by caravanning people down the Baja, towing trailers to enjoy the Baja sunshine during the winters. Soon many of those adventurers decided to remove their trailers and build permanent homes. The 4-room boutique hotel and pool were added. Currently we have 11 full time residents, the rest continue to maintain homes north of the border and head south for the winter season - November thru April.

Can we really see whales?

Absolutely! Whale watching season is November through April. You can spy them from the beaches, from the mountains, from the highway, anywhere you can see the Pacific!

And baby turtles?!?!

Yeah, they’re super cute. Hatching season is December through April. You can get more info from the conservation group Tortugueros.
